Acupuncture for Endometriosis Back Pain Relief
Treating endometriosis Back Pain with Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a significantly researched and effective treatment for endometriosis related back pain. Endometriosis doesn’t just cause pelvic pain it can create persistent lower back pain, sacral pain, and even sciatic-type symptoms. For some, the discomfort radiates into the hips or down the legs. It can also impact on rib cage and shoulder pain. When this happens month after month, it severely affects your whole quality of life and is often not picked up by general doctor visits as a link with Endo.
Effective HOLISTIC ENDOMETRIosis Back Pain Treatment
In acupuncture, we look at the whole person — not just the symptom. If you are reading this you will likely be very aware endo is a whole body condition.
With endometriosis, back pain can be linked to Blood Stasis, inflammation, pelvic tension, scar tissue, hormonal imbalances, fertility struggles and nervous system sensitisation. While conventional treatments often focus solely on suppressing symptoms, acupuncture works by supporting the body’s regulatory systems — helping to reduce pain signals, calm inflammation, and improve circulation.
The beauty of acupuncture is that it doesn’t only target the site of pain. We may treat the lower back, but we also support:
Promoting better blood flow
Hormonal balance
Temperature regulation
Nervous system regulation
Stress resilience
Sleep quality
Because these systems are all interconnected.
In my clinical experience with patients, there is almost always an emotional component alongside chronic endometriosis pain, and that’s not “all in your head.” Chronic pain itself is stressful. Living with unpredictable flare-ups is stressful. Feeling dismissed is stressful.
Stress activates the nervous system, increasing muscle tension and amplifying pain signals. This can tighten the lower back and pelvic floor, making symptoms worse.
In Chinese Medicine, the lower back is closely linked to the Kidney system — considered our foundational energy reserve. Long-term stress, heavy bleeding, overwork, or pushing through pain can deplete this reserve, contributing to persistent lower back weakness and ache.
Chinese Medicine has an incredible way of treating Blood Stasis with needles and Moxa, we can improve the flow of Blood which in turn eases pain. Many of my patients experience a reduction in pain quite quickly.
Breathing also plays a crucial role. When we are in pain or under stress, breathing becomes shallow. In Chinese Medicine, the Lungs govern Qi (energy) and help circulate it throughout the body. Restricted breathing can contribute to tension in the upper back and shoulders, which many endometriosis sufferers also experience.
Conclusion
Acupuncture is not just about needles. The needles are a tool to create movement where it is needed in the body. It also involves looking at relative stress, diet, posture and exercises to work with the patient on all levels. Most patients see improvement in at least 2 cycles or 6-8 treatments although they still choose to return for ‘maintenance’ treatments,. For those trying to conceive a family it can be more complex and may require further investigations.
Why wouldn’t you try it as opposed to taking long term painkillers? It really is the ONLY other option – and costs less than a couple of year’s worth of prescriptions.
